Befriending the Body
“Befriending the Body” was written during my TCTSY certification program, but lived long before that. This image holds a moment from that season—sunlight, silence, and the slow work of healing. I’m deeply grateful for those who inspired me, contributed to my journey, and supported me before, during, and beyond the season that fruited this paper. The full story will be shared soon here on our website.

Abstract
This paper reflects on my lived experience in various roles within society—as a daughter, sister, mother, wife, facilitator, student, immigrant, and simply as myself—through Trauma-Informed Yoga, which led me to explore and deepen my understanding of the Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga’s (TCTSY) model, the first yoga-based, empirically validated clinical intervention for complex trauma and chronic, treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
It offered me an opportunity to engage in both learning and unlearning—challenging my existing beliefs, habits, and patterns, not only in my life but also in the way I facilitate and support others. This process invited me to reflect on my practices and perceptions, creating space for growth, self-awareness, and a deeper connection with both myself and the work I do.
This paper is a series of my learning reflections on Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) about Self-Care, Interoception, Ahimsa (Non-Violence), Attachment Theory, and Trauma & Memory. I explore how trauma manifests in the body and how compassionate movement, like yoga, can offer an opportunity for healing, growth and resilience. Rooted in trauma-sensitive practices, the paper emphasizes self-compassion, embodied presence, and the importance of befriending the body in the healing process. While the journey is non-linear and unique to each individual, I offer this reflection to invite readers—whether individuals or practitioners—to deepen their understanding of trauma and the role of Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga in fostering resilience and connection.
